Our Beliefs
Jesus at the Center
New City Church serves as a non-denominational, creedal, gospel-centered church holding to the historic practices of the church and orthodox Christian beliefs as presented in the Bible and summarized in the Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed, and the Confessional Statement of the Gospel Coalition. Our posture in holding to these beliefs can be summarized in the ancient maxim: “In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”
What is Gospel Centrality?
The gospel is not the door you walk through to get into the Christian life and then leave behind. It is the air you breathe once you're inside.
Gospel centrality means that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is not the starting point of our faith, it is the center of it. Everything we are, everything we do, and everything we build together as a church flows from one irreducible reality: that Jesus lived the life we couldn't live, died the death we deserved to die, and rose so that everything broken could be made new.
This changes how we see ourselves. We are not people trying to earn God's approval, we are people who already have it, fully and forever, because of Jesus. We are not performing for God. We are loved by him.
This changes how we see each other. A gospel-centered community doesn't gather around shared preferences or demographics. It gathers around a shared rescue. That levels every room we walk into. This changes how we see the city. We don't serve Charleston to make ourselves feel good or to build our reputation. We serve because we have been served at infinite cost. We give because we have been given everything.
At New City Church, gospel centrality means we never graduate from grace. The most mature person in the room and the person who walked in for the first time on the same Sunday need the same thing — Jesus, and the relentless good news of what he has done.
